In consultation between the Public Entity Bonaire (OLB) and the Dutch State it has been decided that the responsibility for the fuel supply will lie entirely with the OLB.
With this, the role of Bonaire Bon Transition (BBT) in the supply and storage of fuels on the island will disappear. Accordingly, BBT shall not build a fuel terminal on Bonaire. The possible future role of BBT within the energy transition on Bonaire is currently being evaluated.

Bonaire Bon Transition (BBT) is conducting a public tender to select a market party for the construction of a new fuel terminal on Bonaire. This is an important step for the further development of Bonaire’s energy infrastructure.

Collaboration with local companies
On August 2nd, 2024, the tender for the construction of the new fuel terminal was published (publication tender BBT). This tender is open to companies with experience in the detailed design and construction of fuel terminals that meet the latest standards. Bidders are encouraged to work together as much as possible with local companies during the various stages of the planning and construction phases. In the selection phase, extensive attention will also be paid to safety measures and sustainability initiatives.

Location choice
The new terminal is intended for the supply, storage, and distribution of fuel for air traffic, power generation, and local use. Extensive research has shown that the new facility is best built south of the airport. One of the reasons is that the existing pier can be used for supply at this location, and there is for construction in the sea.

Necessity of the new fuel terminal
The current storage facilities on Bonaire are outdated and will soon no longer meet safety standards. This poses risks for people, animals, and the environment. Despite great efforts in the field of renewable energy, fuel storage remains necessary. Fuel is needed to generate electricity when there is not enough sun or wind available. Additionally, fuels are needed to refuel airplanes, boats, and cars.

About Bonaire Bon Transition
BBT falls under the responsibility of the Ministry of Climate Policy and Green Growth and was established to ensure that Bonaire has sufficient energy, now and in the future. BBT works closely with the Public Body Bonaire (OLB), ContourGlobal, WEB, and Curoil. In addition to the construction of a new fuel terminal, BBT invests in the expansion of solar and wind energy.

Selection Procedure
After the tender closes, a review committee will evaluate the submitted proposals. The selection of the winning bidder is expected by the end of this year, with construction scheduled to start in early 2025 and completion in early 2026.

drinking water from seawater and the application of sustainable methods such as
    reverse osmosis.
  • The recent Supervisory Board meeting and an informal meeting with
stakeholders such as ContourGlobal, WEB, and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management took place at
the Terramar Museum, where the importance of collaboration for energy projects
    was emphasized.
  • BBT has announced that it will become co-owner of a solar panel park, a
step that reduces Bonaire’s dependence on fossil fuels and contributes
    to sustainable energy supplies.
The new construction of a modern fuel terminal, which is necessary for the safe
storage and distribution of fuels, has been discussed. This development is crucial
for the energy future of the island.
  • The Hato water plant has reported impressive growth in water production,
with an annual increase of 11% and a capacity of 7600 cubic meters per day.

Last Tuesday, representatives from various organizations gathered at the Terramar museum for a meeting organized by Bonaire Bon Transition (BBT). Among the attendees were the Island Governor and representatives from WEB, Curoil, BIA, BOPEC, ContourGlobal, and the Ministry of I&W.

During the meeting, Walter Wattenbergh, director of BBT, emphasized the ongoing commitment of BBT and its partners to a safe and increasingly sustainable energy supply on Bonaire. He underscored the crucial role of collaboration among various stakeholders in realizing this vision. “Structural change is only possible by uniting everyone’s expertise and working together,” stated Wattenbergh.

The meeting provided a platform for discussion and collaboration among different stakeholders, aimed at making Bonaire’s energy infrastructure safer and more sustainable. Recent developments, including BBT’s co-ownership of the solar panel park, realized by ContourGlobal, were also discussed during the meeting.

In addition to highlighting progress in renewable energy, plans for the construction of a new fuel terminal were discussed. Despite efforts in renewable energy, this terminal remains necessary for the safe storage and distribution of fuels on Bonaire. The modern terminal will replace existing storage facilities.
